Emergency Dentist in Edmonton
Accidents happen, and dental injuries are no exception. While many of these injuries are preventable with proper precautions, it's essential to know how to respond when they occur. Omnia Dental is equipped to help you manage dental emergencies effectively. If you need an emergency dentist in Edmonton, give us a call.
Staying Prepared
Having a first aid kit on hand is crucial for addressing injuries of all kinds. You can purchase a first aid kit at your local pharmacy or create your own using supplies you already have. It's wise to keep a kit in your vehicle for emergencies. Your first aid kit should include:
- Sterile gloves
- Gauze (rolls and squares)
- Antiseptic
- Distilled water
- Head Injuries
Head Injuries
Trauma to the face and mouth often coincides with head injuries. In cases of car accidents or other severe injuries, assessing for a head injury is vital, as it may take priority over dental concerns. If you suspect a broken jaw from a dental emergency, seek immediate attention at the nearest emergency hospital. For cuts in the mouth that may require stitches, a medical center can assist if a dentist is unavailable.
Knocked Out, Loose, or Broken Teeth
If you experience a blow to the mouth resulting in loose or broken teeth, this is a dental emergency requiring immediate attention. Knocked-out teeth have the highest chance of being saved if treated by a dentist within 30 minutes of the incident. If you've broken a tooth, your dentist may restore it using a white filling compound.
To manage the situation:
1. Collect the tooth or fragments.
2. Rinse your mouth gently with clean water.
3. Apply gauze to any bleeding area, biting down gently until it stops.
4. If there's no bleeding, rinse the tooth fragments carefully and keep them safe. Avoid touching the root; handle the tooth by the enamel.
5. Place the tooth or fragments in your cheek pouch to keep them moist while heading to the dentist.
6. If the tooth is unstable but still in place, gently close your jaw to stabilize it. Have someone contact our emergency dental office on your way.
Tooth Infections
Tooth infections are serious and require urgent treatment. If over-the-counter pain relief hasn't alleviated your discomfort, you may have an infection. Signs of infection include:
- A pustule on the gums (do not attempt to drain it)
- Fever
- Swelling in the mouth area
- A persistent bad taste in your mouth
- Difficulty opening and closing your jaw
Our team will do everything possible to see you on the same day, but if that's not feasible, you should seek another dentist who can treat the infection promptly.
