Icon resin infiltration is a minimally invasive restorative treatment designed to address post-orthodontic white-spot lesions (WSLs) and certain congenital hypocalcified enamel lesions (also known as "hypo" spots). WSLs occur when there is a cyclical imbalance between demineralization and remineralization of the enamel, often caused by poor hygiene, plaque buildup, bacteria, and acids.
Over time, this process decreases the ability of calcium and other ions to penetrate deeper into the enamel, eventually halting the lesion. The white appearance of these spots is due to light scattering at the subsurface of the demineralized enamel. Hypo spots, or enamel bruising, are congenital enamel defects often caused by trauma or infection affecting the primary teeth.
